An Enquiry into the Obligations of Christians to Use Means for the
Conversion of the Heathens led directly to the formation of the Baptist
Missionary Society, and was to inspire Christian missionaries for
generations to follow. The author himself could boast great experience:
having amassed oratorical experience during his younger years as a
schoolmaster, and as the pastor of Leicester's Harvey Lane Baptist Church.
The text contains impassioned arguments which attempt to justify missionary
work, followed by a researched history of the practice. Later, Carey
discusses charts which measure populations through the world and their
religious beliefs. All of these charts are reproduced for this edition,
allowing the reader insight into Carey's ambitious approach.

He was an industrialist. An economist. A medical humanitarian. A media pioneers. An educator. A moral reformer. A botanist. And a Christian missionary. And he did more for the transformation of the Indian subcontinent in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries than any other individual before or since.
Many know of William Carey. Some know about the specifics of his work and ministry. But few understand the profound contemporary significance of his life. Few realize how much we owe the increasing globalization of Christianity to the silent revolution he initiated. Fewer still are aware of his legacy of sensitivity to the variety of issues confronting true gospel witness in any culture.
This biography about the central character in the story of India's modernization and transformation will help you understand Carey's impact. But the Legacy of William Carey is more than a biography. It is a charge to all Christians to respond in kind within our own cultures, and to use Carey's example as our model for taking the light of the Gospel into every corner of society. If we follow in his footsteps, not only will lives be bettered this side of heaven, but hearts will be changed for eternity--and entire cultures transformed for Christ.

In the 1790s English shoemaker William Carey became a man on fire. Although
the British government and even Carey’s colleagues disapproved of
missionaries he would not give up the idea that Heathens who did not know
Christ were doomed to eternal damnation. Britain’s crown jewel India
especially drew him. Carey believed hundreds of millions of Indians were
doomed without Christ!
With meager funds as a Dissident he and his family sailed for India in
1793. How his family suffered there! First their mission was in the
Sunderbans, a horrific muddy coast crawling with man-eating tigers. A more
congenial place later was too late for Carey’s wife Dolly. In an ongoing
tragedy that lasted 14 years she ranted and raged, losing her mind, finally
dying in despair. Carey’s four sons - social misfits and uneducated - were
barely salvaged by others.

A beautifully produced biography of the 'father of modern missions'. Peace Carey s compelling pages convey the very atmosphere of that extraordinary period of missionary advance. This life of Carey is structured around a series of remarkable events, always unplanned and unexpected, which opened the way to undreamed of achievements. Carey and his colleagues overcame mountainous obstacles to become the most productive church planters and Bible translators of all time. No other work compares with this moving treatment
